You would never pass up the chance to look great in seconds, would you? Don’t you fret. The solution is a leader in hair accessory trends: hair extensions.

Realistically speaking, no “one” hair extension exists. The accessory can in fact be categorized according to the origin of the hair used, the color, the texture and the method by which you attach the hair extension. This article looks into the methods of attaching hair extensions to your own hair.

Fundamentally, you have a number of methods to choose from: bonding, braiding, clip-ins (also known as clip-ons), fusion, ring X and pre-tipped U or pre-tipped I.

As their name suggests, clip-on hair extensions can be clipped on to your own hair. They are equipped with microclips that are attached to one end of the accessory. You can save some money if you clip on the accessories by yourself. The task does not require expert handling by a professional hairdresser.

Some hair extensions don’t have microclips and need to be braided along with your own hair, hence the name “braiding.” Keep in mind that there are several ways you can braid your hair. A skilled hairdresser should be able to execute a variety of styles.

Other hair extensions require the application of bonding glue at one end so that the glued tip will stick securely on your hair root. The process is called bonding. Bonding is as simple as sticking on a false eyelash on your eye lid. Removing the hair extensions is easy, but you need to use a special glue remover intended for such purpose.

Weaving, which is the most popular style of attaching hair extensions, is when tracks or cornrows of your natural hair are made close to the scalp then the hair extensions are sewn or weaved into these tracks. Some experts assert that if you have badly damaged hair, this might be the best method of putting on a hair extension because your real hair will be enclosed in the hair extensions.

Some other hair extensions can be attached following the hot glue gun method. The same process is known by the other term “fusion.” You use a hot glue gun to attach the hair extensions. First, put hot glue on the extensions, then attach them to your own hair. The process could need up to six long hours to complete. It’s fairly labor-intensive too.

There are some variants of hair extensions that already have pre-glued tips. You then attach the extensions using a special applicator.

Ring X is said to be a relatively new method of attachment. Small metallic rings have been placed at one end of the hair extensions. A special tool is then used to attach these metallic rings to your natural hair.

The clip-on procedure is quite easy, but the rest are better executed by a professional hairdresser. Bear in mind that attaching the extension inappropriately can damage both your hair and the hair accessory.
